Tower Christian School Student Site - Privacy Policy
The Privacy Policy
The Tower Christian School Student Site takes privacy and security very seriously. This page is intended to help you understand our privacy policy, and to help you understand the broader concepts involved. This site exists primarily to educate Tower Christian School families about privacy and security issues and the safe use of internet technology, while helping some of our programs (Newspaper, Yearbook, etc.) to take advantage of that technology. Identity theft is becoming a large scale problem, and many computer savvy young people do not realize the problems and the dangers involved with many of their everyday activities. The federal government has partnered with many leaders in technology to create a number of tools to assist families in protecting themselves while interacting with technology.
Collection of Information
A primary area of concern with the internet is the collection and sharing of Personally Identifiable Information. We want people within the Tower family to understand these issues, so part of that is our own disclosure of how we use any Personally Identifiable Information. Personally Identifiable Information is information about you like your name, address, email address, or phone number, and that is not otherwise publicly available. The Tower Christian School Student Site only collects information in connection with our Student Forum, which is designed as a safe place for the Tower family to interact online. For the Forum the only piece of Personally Identifiable Information that we gather is an e-mail address so that we can follow up and confirm members as part of the Tower family. This is explicitly done so that our online sharing area is limited to Tower family members, and so that anonymous users are not allowed to enter the area and disrupt our family members' online experience. Information entered by non-Tower family members is discarded as soon as it is identified.
Our forum software uses cookies and collects IP addresses (an IP address is a number that can uniquely identify a specific computer or other network device on the internet). The software may at times make use of IP addresses and cookies for the purpose of enhancing your user experience. This information is not used to develop a personal profile of you and the log files are regularly purged.
None of this information, either from the private forum area, or our publicly accessible pages, is shared with anyone at any time.
Issues for Children in Particular
The fact that we are limiting our private areas to Tower family members creates an additional issue that is unknown to many parents. Children younger than 13 are explicitly protected by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, which is enforced by the FTC. An important site for all parents to know and understand is the FTC's site dedicated to the issues concerning COPPA. Because of COPPA, we require a written form to be submitted in order to allow a child under 13 to be approved to register for the site. There are important issues for all parents to understand about their rights once they submit an approval. They should understand that they may consent to the collection of necessary information about their child without permitting the site to disclose such information to third parties (which is something that we do not do anyway). They should also understand that the site will not collect more information about their child than is reasonably necessary to participate on the site (in our case all we ever collect is their e-mail address as part of identifying them as part of the Tower family).
Parents should also understand that the profile information may be changed by entering a password and that they may ask for this registration profile to be removed. They should understand that they can contact the administrators of this site at any time to determine what information about their child has been collected, to confirm how that information is used, and to request that the site no longer collect information about their child.
Additional Information Collection Issues
Some of what we do will end up involving hyperlinks to websites owned and operated by third parties. These third party websites (such as the important government sites noted on this page) have their own privacy policies, including cookies, and we urge you to review them. They will govern the use of personal information you submit or are collected by cookies while visiting these websites.
