Hi. I’m Luke. Luke Ken. Luke Ken Moon to be exact. I’m a detective, the one and only in my school. I got a case, a real big case. But, I think I should start at the beginning...
Bleep, bleep, bleep, bling! Bleep, bleep, blee-.
“Kids don’t panic. Single file.” The only one panicking was Ms. Carter.
I got in line and walked to the door. I looked up. There was no smoke. That was funny. I knew it wasn’t a drill, because we have one once a month and we had just had one. I also heard sirens and there were never fire trucks.
We walked out onto the large schoolyard and stood in line next to the other kids. There were two classes to the left and five to the right. I am in the sixth grade and can outsmart any kid at school. Oh ya! I am smart. I sniffed the air and instead of smelling smoke I smelled a mystery.
Whispers were going around. A third grader had pulled the alarm. No, the janitor was smoking in the broom closet. Maybe a trashcan had been on fire in the boys’ bathroom?
I doubted the trashcan because there was no smoke. The janitor didn’t smoke, and the third graders were on a field trip. I knew this because my little sister was with them.
Some of the seventh graders were complaining. “What rotten timing for a false alarm. We could have been nearly finished with our math test by now.” “What are you talking about? I hate math.”
Some of the youngest kids were crying and asking about their lunch boxes and covering their ears as the fire trucks drove into the parking lot.
Then I heard the principal calling my name. What did he want me for?
