“It looks like that cat,” mumbled Anton. “You know? The one that is always mysteriously appearing out of nowhere?”
I knew what he was talking about, but Nick was quick to throw in some sarcasm. “Yah, sure. A cat mysteriously appeared inside the school, threw on a black mask, and then painted a wall pink!”
Anton threw her a ‘look’ before resuming his study of those eyes. “Who else do we know that has one green eye, and one blue?”
While Anton and I tried to think it over, Nick was becoming impatient. “Common! You call yourselves detectives? This dude is obviously wearing mixmatched colored contacts! Hello!”
“Well of course, but who would do that?” I said this hoping it make it seem like I knew what I was doing (which was not true at all).
“You seem to know a lot about this, Nick,” Anton said, straightening his back so they were eye level. “First of all you tell Luke details he didn’t know. Secondly you find my camera. And now you are explaining how the ‘dude’ changed eye color. Is there anything else you would like to share?”
Nick got that smile one gets when the greatest comeback of all time had just popped into your head and you know the person who will hear it will be so amazed that he wouldn’t dare verbally challenge you again. Unfortunately, Nick never got the chance to use that comeback.
“Boys!” Mr. Collins sharply said. He had been standing in the doorway of the classroom and now came cantering toward us, his defensive side shinning visibly through. “We should leave.”
“But why, Mr. Collins?” I asked, a touch of whining in my voice. Anton signed for me not to protest as his dad grabbed our arms and thrust us into the school hallway.
“To the car, boys,” Mr. Collins kept saying, even though we were practically running there. He didn’t even explain what was going on once we were inside the vehicle.
“Dad, what is going on?” asked Anton. My friend’s face showed great worry as his dad shook his head and then sped out of the parking lot.
I wondered what was happening too, but then noticed something out of the corner of my eye. It was Nick…
