Tower Christian School Trumpeteer Never Ending Story

Episode 15 - June 2009

“But...”

“...I thought Ghettos was the enemy?”
“No time to explain now, son,” was the only reply. The next thing I knew, I was being hoisted through a bright hole and into a strange warehouse.
“I thought we were going to the museum?”
“We are. How many questions do detectives ask anyway?” said Nick.
Great, I thought, she’s getting her old attitude back.
“In case anyone found the tunnel, we didn’t want it leading directly to Headquarters,” said my dad as he popped out of the trap door.
Anton followed him. “We’ll take these bikes to the museum.”
“Bikes?” my question went unheard as the rest of the group ran to the other side of the warehouse, where sat three gleaming motorcycles, and where stood another black-clad stranger. I guess I didn’t get the memo that black was the new cool thing.
“Pete, so glad you could make it,” my dad greeted the stranger.
“Pete” didn’t have a mask on, although I wish he did. He was young—around 18 or so—and had the largest bruise on his cheek. I couldn’t help but stare at it and wonder how it got there. Pete must have noticed because he winked and then came over to me.
“Rule #1 in this group: Don’t mess with the multi-eye-colored man, or you’ll end up looking like me,” he grinned. I counted six teeth missing.
“Okay, I’ll remember that,” I said, trying not to stare. “Is there anything else I should know?”
Pete laughed. “You haven’t been listening to Nicole have you?”
It took me about a full minute to realize whom he was talking about. “You mean Nick?”
“Whatever her name is, she isn’t always truthful.”
I looked at him, wondering if he was just pulling my leg. But a part of me could tell in that beat-up face of his that he wasn’t. “So…so you mean that…that all of my conclusions and recaps could be a complete lie?”
“No. Just not 100% accurate. But don’t worry,” Pete clapped me on the back. “I have a way for you to get the answers you need.”
This way involved ditching my dad and Anton (who were teamed up on one motorcycle) and, of course, Nick (on her own bike). Pete took the busiest of highways, weaving dangerously between cars. He finally ended up stopping at an old Victorian home in a part of town I wasn’t allowed in. Oh well.
“This is my house. No one’s home. It’ll do,” Pete said quickly, rushing me in. I wondered why, since he said no one was home, and we had lost my dad a while ago. Another oh well.
“Your dad has told me a lot about you, Luke,” Pete said as we climbed the stairs to his room. “So much, I started liking you before I even met you. It’s not often you meet a kid detective.”
“Um…thanks?”
“Now, I need you to think about Nicole. I know something is wrong with her. She just can’t be trusted. You need to think, Luke. Think about anything that she said that even sounds slightly odd. The more we know about her, the safer we’ll be.”
My heart jumped at the possibility my safety was in danger. But I gulped down my fear and thought about all the suspicious things that had to do with Nick. “She tried to make us believe that man had contacts instead of heterochromia. She made it seem like Anton was kidnapped, but then said Mr. Won was. And then…”
“Then what?” Pete looked eager for information. Maybe I finally knew something that no one else did.
“She had this evil look in the car, when Mr. Collins was driving away from the school. She yelled at me when I brought it up.”

Pete put his head in his hands. “This is getting much worse than I thought.”
